Formulation Proportion: Choosing HPMC Thickening Agent in Laundry Detergent

Post time: Jul-01-2023

When formulating laundry detergents with HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) as a thickening agent, it is essential to consider the appropriate proportion of ingredients to achieve the desired viscosity and stability.   Here is a suggested formulation proportion for incorporating HPMC into a laundry detergent:

Ingredients:

Surfactants (such as linear alkylbenzene sulfonates or alcohol ethoxylates): 20-25%

Builders (such as sodium tripolyphosphate or sodium carbonate): 10-15%

Enzymes (protease, amylase, or lipase): 1-2%

HPMC Thickening Agent (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose): 0.5-1%

Chelating agents (such as EDTA or citric acid): 0.2-0.5%

Fragrances: 0.5-1%

Optical brighteners: 0.1-0.2%

Fillers and additives (sodium sulfate, sodium silicate, etc.): Remaining percentage to reach 100%

Note: The above percentages are approximate and can be adjusted based on specific product requirements and desired performance.

Instructions:

Combine surfactants: In a mixing vessel, blend the chosen surfactants (linear alkylbenzene sulfonates or alcohol ethoxylates) to form the detergent’s primary cleaning agents.   Mix until homogeneous.

Add builders: Incorporate the selected builders (sodium tripolyphosphate or sodium carbonate) to enhance detergent performance and aid in stain removal.   Mix thoroughly to ensure uniform distribution.

Introduce enzymes: Incorporate the enzymes (protease, amylase, or lipase) for targeted stain removal.   Add them gradually while stirring continuously to ensure proper dispersion.

Incorporate HPMC: Slowly sprinkle the HPMC thickening agent (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) into the mixture, while continuously agitating to avoid clumping.   Allow sufficient time for the HPMC to hydrate and thicken the detergent.

Add chelating agents: Include chelating agents (EDTA or citric acid) to improve the detergent’s performance in water hardness conditions.   Mix thoroughly to ensure proper dispersion.

Introduce fragrances: Incorporate fragrances to impart a pleasant scent to the detergent.   Mix gently to distribute the fragrance evenly throughout the formulation.

Include optical brighteners: Add optical brighteners to enhance the appearance of laundered fabrics.   Mix gently to ensure uniform distribution.

Incorporate fillers and additives: Add fillers and additional additives, such as sodium sulfate or sodium silicate, as necessary to achieve the desired bulk and texture.   Mix thoroughly to ensure uniform dispersion.

Test and adjust: Conduct small-scale tests to evaluate the viscosity and stability of the detergent formulation.   Adjust the proportion of HPMC or other ingredients as needed to achieve the desired consistency and performance.

Remember, the formulation proportions provided are guidelines, and actual proportions may vary based on specific product requirements, ingredient quality, and desired performance.   It is advisable to consult with Yibang experts or conduct further testing to optimize the formulation for your specific needs.
