HPMC YB 6000

EipponCellHPMC 6000 is a hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose ether specifically designed for ceramics applications. In a study, various proportions of powdered hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and starch were utilized as binders in the extrusion process of silicon nitride green bodies. The investigation focused on evaluating the three-point bending strength of the samples and analyzing the microstructure of the fracture surface.

The results revealed that HPMC had a significant impact on enhancing the green strength compared to the use of starch. Incorporating 10% HPMC as a binder resulted in a flexural strength of 29.3±3.1 MPa, which was approximately 7.5 times higher than similar materials utilizing starch. The substantial increase in strength was attributed to the presence of coarse, fibrous HPMC particles that aligned themselves along the extrusion direction and exhibited pull-out behavior during the bending test.

Application of HPMC YB 6000

In the ceramic industry,EipponCell HPMC YB 6000 is employed in the production of ceramic fiber-reinforced gas filter materials with high-temperature resistance. This particular HPMC product aids in achieving a balance between strength and porosity, ultimately enhancing the mechanical strength of the filter material while maintaining optimal filtration performance.

High-temperature filter materials serve as critical components for effective gas filtration and dust removal in high-temperature environments. Both high-density and low-density ceramics can be utilized as filter media. High-density ceramics are typically composed of silicon carbide, alumina, or cordierite materials, while low-density ceramics predominantly consist of aluminosilicate fibers. Low-density ceramic filter materials possess desirable characteristics such as high porosity, low filtration resistance, and good fracture toughness. However, due to the loose structure of the fibers, their mechanical strength is relatively low, increasing the risk of filter cartridge damage.

On the other hand, high-density ceramics exhibit high mechanical strength but also suffer from elevated filtration resistance. There exists a mutually restrictive relationship between porosity and strength in such materials. Moreover, high-density ceramics have a relatively larger specific gravity, which escalates production, installation, and transportation costs associated with the filter materials.
